I had read about the beacons but did not know about the cement arrows.

When flying around Germany in a Blackhawk we could see many markers on hill sides that showed the way home for WWII aircrews, they were swastikas along with an arrow made by planting trees and bushes in the shapes.
Now we have demonstrable evidence that if you try to lead from behind, eventually the guys up front will stop looking back for instructions.
