pain, but piece of mind
So transfering stuff over wont be infected? Im not sure.

pics and text can easily be sent to an emailbox for safe storage, you can scrutinize each item later before you put it back in comp

forget about programs etc, just re download and install them

shitcan the music and videos though, as its so large and shit is sometimes hidden in it

as long as you are ready able and willing to accept that you MAY lose some stuff, you gain the benefit of knowing that your comp, once reformatted, is a pure as the driven snow machine with not an iota of virus/trojan et al

but then again, im sure you will just get right back into the amputee-midget-bdsm-manseks-roman shower-porn and mess up the system again ;)

reformat is an all day process and is a drag, but nothing like a clean fresh system ready to go

For the future you might wanna look into an imaging program. You can take an image of your h/d in the last known good config and "reinstall" it. It's faster than messing around with cleaning the viruses and so forth. I use Acronis True Image. It's saved my ass many times, this morning in fact. I'm switching over to Windows 7 for my gaming rig (it's all XP) and during the install I screwed up and formatted the h/d which got rid of the boot.ini file. Since I have 4 partitions each with it's own OS I found I couldn't access the other three. I popped in my recovery disc, chose the image I wanted restored (including the MFT files) and voila! Now the boot.ini is back with the old OS and I can reinstall 7 again. You can also restore to a previous version with older drivers that worked which is much quicker than uninstalling the new drivers, reboot in safe mode, run Driver Cleaner Pro, reboot, install drivers, reboot.

I seriously do think you should consider installing Linux Ubuntu as a dual-boot - it really is safe online without the need for AV software. I use it almost 100% of the time now (I think I've booted into Windows twice this year - and I can't remember why). It's very user-friendly and versatile. The installation will configure the dual-boot.

You can have worry-free web browsing without the need for maintaining AV software etc.

It's only happened to me once, but it's quite entertaining when you hit a drive-by web attack and see the web page trying to run Windows software (Ubuntu has a Windows run-time environment called 'WINE' that you can run most Windows software in - you get a pop-up box explaining that the website is trying to run the file and asking if you want to run it in WINE).

Yeah Daii it will be no joy to much stuff to send even if i could open my email, but i dont think i will loose all that much well all of my emails and saved games etc, but most tv shows and stuff are on the slave or external drive so they may be ok. And Ruggie i think i will look in that seems like it would bring it down from a chernobyl to a mere 3 mile island and say if you got something like this again just rolling back would get rid of it?
And Ginger Ubuntu anything one needs to know aboot that? do you just point and click so to speak much the same as windows or are you typing lines of code or something like that?

Point and click. You can even try it out from the installation CD (you can d'load an image & burn - or for a nominal cost, order a disc) without installing it onto your HDD (won't run at full pelt this way though).

Here's a YouTube video showing how to do a dual-boot installation (older version of Ubuntu & XP).

http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?doc ... 637434537#

It might be worth reading up on partitioning & file structure (Linux doesn't use drive letters - so there's no C drive :o ) before you start - just so things aren't entirely alien - you don't need much computer knowledge.

Plenty of other YouTube videos showing Ubuntu.

Also, take a look at the Wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28 ... _system%29

UPDATE: more up-to-date video of dual install using current version of Ubuntu & XP - http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?doc ... 7361459095

Here's a handy page with a few good links on it:
