Chevettes were rear wheel drive only.
Toyota Corollas were ultra reliable and long lived. Dying from rust in most cases. But rear drive in the US till about 1985-87~

I still prefer the rear drive Corolla, I never owned one, but drove them frequently in the late 1980s.

Wrong again at least on the Chevette. (I owned a rare 1986 Diesel and drove it to death).
Built in rear drive only through 1998! NEVER a front drive, ever.

as I said, my bad on the Chevette.....but, damn that car lasted, and sure as hell wasn't a V-8. The Corolla was a 1998, so definitely front wheel, as was the Hyundai. I also had a couple other fishing-only cars that were FWD. I'll still stand by the comment that there is nothing inherently short-lived about FWD vehicles. In my experience, the driver and the maintenence are the most important factors in longevity.

I agree. I ran a 1992 Chevy Corsica for 220,000+ miles.
The car was spartan but made for an excellent shop hack.
I gave it away running.

I still prefer a rear drive for servicability.
Front drives are basicly a throw away when they
phuck up in their old age.

In that respect Pudster is correct. For the long haul
rear drive is a better choice.

I guess I feel 200K is a long haul, especially given some of the places I try and drive them. I'd love to have pics of a Nissan Sentra I owned, when I drove it over Penn's View Road......dirt, and full of boulders on either side. That car was at about a 30-degree angle at points in that 14 mile drive. It was a unibody design, and my mechanic looked at the underside a few months later and asked what the hell I was doing with that car. Loved that little car. Nice stick shift trannie, nice power for the weight, and got around 175K out of it, trading it in with about 6 pieces of the exhaust system and other miscellaneous parts in the back of the drivers seat. Didn't get much in trade, as I recall.

Positive. I've worked on more then my fair share of them

I believe you, CUDA........hell, I'd not have been shocked if that car ran on something involving rubber bands and wind-up keys. But, damn, it started every morning, no matter how cold. Used to love running around the Connecticut countryside, jump-starting my friends who called that car the 'Jogging Shoe'.

Is just look back for the last twenty years...
The Ford Crown Victoria was "the car"...V8 and rear wheel drive for
Emergency Response...then look at the "fleet" usage of it in Taxi service.

Everybody in those endeavors is crying....cuz, Ford don't make'm anymore...
Hence SUV's and Chargers dominance, now.

I've driven most of them type cars. Starting with the 454 Chevy Impala's/Caprices, Dodge 440's,
Ford Torino's, Chevy Nova's, Chryslers and Plymouths. All rear wheel drive. I even driven some of the front wheel Dodge K cars all of them a POS.

The last twenty years of the Crown Vic's were the best, bar none.

Agreed. The Crown Vic was one of the best cars ever.
They made them at the Ford plant just outside of town here and for a number of years every other car you saw on the road around here was a Vic.
