:( :( :(

My hat is off to the US Army Corps of engineers for a CAREFUL recovery of this historic aircraft.
Sadly the pilot drowned in his effort to save the plane .
His last act was an excellent WATER LANDING.

But.....

I like your remarks HH and much agree with them.
It totally sucks that the pilot gave his life for the plane, I do admire his last honorable act.
It was truly 'unselfish' for those of us who can appreciate it. I'm just thinking of his family....

In retrospect, he was worth more than the plane.
The first thing I was taught when I learned to fly, was don't try to save the aircraft.
The plane I owned and flew was made in 1949...five or so years newer, than that one.
What a hard, instant decision, that pilot made.....for all of us.

:(

War bird pilots like to say
that they don't wear parachutes
because they would be shot
for bailing out of that airplane.

The Army divers poked water letterouters so
it would drain and not collapse like the PBY
did in Florida recently.

It looks like the pilot greased it in.
Bummer he died doing so.

IMO it will fly again.
