I find it amusing that on this, and a host of other issues, the far right and far left are like mirrors in their view of Obama. Freedom of the press is important - and while I despise what Wikileaks is doing - I think that the government is attacking this issue at the wrong level. The reality is that they should take action to stop the leaks from occurring in the first place. Unfortunately - doing this is directly contrary to Obama's liberal agenda. Now - I am not saying that he or anyone in his administration intentionally caused the leaks to occur. What I AM saying is that the policies and ideologies that this president has advanced create an environment ripe for this type of event.
The primary issue here is that the media and government are directly and intentionally diverting attention from the REAL culprit - US security policy and the military member who collected and released this information. PFC Bradley Manning should be brought up on treason and perhaps espionage charges - but they are afraid to do this because it will be harmful to the left's political agenda. You see - it is fairly clear that Manning is an overt homosexual who by some accounts was in a rage over the breakup of his relationship with his "drag queen" boyfriend when he collected and sent the information to Wikileaks. If the focus shifts to Manning the government will have to discuss how/why security clearance was granted to and maintained for an individual who's life history was filled with a pattern of rejecting norms and authority, who was disciplined including DEMOTION for erratic behavior including slapping a fellow soldier, who participated openly in internet circles as a homosexual activist, and who openly presented radical anti-war sentiments. WHY WAS A PERSON LIKE THIS LEFT IN A POSITION TO ACCESS SENSITIVE CLASSIFIED INFORMATION? WHY? Well - because removing him from that position would have been politically incorrect. Here is where the "rubber meets the road" folks. Political correctness resulted in the leaking of highly classified information, in the degradation of our ability to manage foreign relations, in our ability to pursue terrorists, and who knows what other impacts will result. All this - because the president does not want to offend a political constituency.
