Hey Wullie!

Post by Buzz »

I have a .54 cal Muzzleloader now. It's pretty comfortable shooting a PRB with 85gr of 3F.

Just so i'd know. I bought a bunch of conicals today and shot them all. They were in the 430gr range and I used 90 gr of 3F. Probably 70 rounds all together.

My shoulder feels like King Kong punched me.

Bottom line. No where near as accurate as the PRB.

I feel for your shoulder. Stories like that make me appreciate my .40. I've been down that .54 caliber road and ain't planning on going back. In fact the way my shoulder has been assing up the last two months, I'm wondering if I can still shoot my Garand and enjoy it. Whne the weather settles down a bit, I'm going to my sister's ranch up on the Red River and give my shoulder and the Garand a work out. I'll take my flinter to have some real fun with too.

Barrel is probably rifled too slow for the conicals, hence better groups with round balls.

Sounded like fun anyway.

PRB in a .54 will take out anything on the N American continent. ;)

The barrel is 1-48. Not as slow as a true PRB twist, but it does well.

I have a Green Mountain 32" 1-70 twist barrel ordered for it.

The .54 with 80gr of real BP 2F has a nice soft recoil. That should be plenty for elk/deer in the range that I can see open sights.

I might have to track it a bit further than those damn conicals, but it will be more pleasant to shoot. I can't wait until next hunting season. I pass a herd on elk everyday hiking with Buddy. They came down low from the snow, and seem to know the hunting season is over. I can almost walk up to them. Some nice looking bulls in the herd.

1-48 out to spin a conical just fine. Might try a different style of bullet and see if you can get one that barrel likes if you're of such a mind. PRB are a lot easier for my tastes.
1-70 is a true PRB barrel. Ought to be FUN!!!
