State Dems' Legislative Strategy: If You Can't Beat 'Em, Go AWOL

If you can't beat them, run.
That's what a total of 49 Democratic legislators in Wisconsin and Indiana have done, walking away from their jobs in protest over bills that would strip or curb the collective bargaining powers of public-sector unions.
The last-ditch effort by Democrats to block austerity-driven budget proposals by Republicans, who control the legislatures and the governor's mansions in those states, has captivated and divided the nation, inspiring thousands of labor supporters to protest and inflaming critics who regard the lawmakers' absence as irresponsible and reckless.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Clearly, from the polling and turnout at rallies, a lot of 'buyer's remorse' in Wisconsin. I don't know about Indiana, yet. Still, what the Dems are doing is perfectly legal parlimentary practice(preventing a quorum), it's up to the voters to decide whether they agree with them.

well, the current polling shows that the will of the voters in Wisconsin was not to gut collective bargaining, or bust up unions. That wasn't put to them in the election rhetoric. At this point, if you held a recall referendum, you'd probably see a lot less GOP members in the state house. What the Dems are doing is using the only parlimentary method available to allow the voter's voices to be heard. Thus far, the Repubs are ignoring that and plowing ahead, without compromise or allowing amendments.

the next election will tell the tale. If the voters didn't agree with this tactic, the Dems lose. If they agree, the Dems win. Bear in mind, this has only been 10 days or so. I would agree with you were they to stay in Illinois for a couple, three months and prevent any legislation from happening. I suspect that won't be the case......

union protesters.

So far, this is backfiring. Further proof of the real motivation(hint: it isn't about budget problems), major ad buy that was briefly put out to support anti-union legislation bought and paid for by the beloved Koch brothers(financiers of the Tea Party Express). These same folks have long sought to eliminate the minimum wage. Wake up, folks, there are people out there who want to grind 90% of you all into slave-wage peons.
They really don't give a rat's ass about 'fiscal responsibility', they are after something far more sinister.

and that might be accurate. Another way to look at it, Pud, if to put this to the taxpayers: if you want the services, then PAY for them. Everyone wants the services, no one wishes to pay the required taxes. That is a HUGE problem in this country.
