surprised to be debating this topic here(it is a mainstay of 'Progressive' sites), but, for the life of me, I could never understand the problem with genetically-modded foods. For instance, a soybean resistant to RoundUp will still have EXACTLY the same nutritional value as any other soybean. Where is the problem? This is a common European paranoia, and, to date, not one person has ever been able to explain to me the danger inherent to anyone eating a genetically modified food item.

From what little I have read about this subject the problem is no one is sure where a problem maybe and that could be a problem. My vote on this would be lots of testing to make sure that the benefits are much greater than any risks. Whenever man starts trying to change how nature works it makes me nerves.callmeslick wrote:..............Where is the problem? ...........
Now we have demonstrable evidence that if you try to lead from behind, eventually the guys up front will stop looking back for instructions.

Well we all should be using replecators by now, like in Star Trek.callmeslick wrote:surprised to be debating this topic here(it is a mainstay of 'Progressive' sites), but, for the life of me, I could never understand the problem with genetically-modded foods. My issue with G mods is that the science behind them is usually controlled by the same corporations that fund the research. It is motivated by profit as much as tobacco companies were.
Also, historically, trying to achieve a relatively quick solution to an age old problem tends to end up with unexpected results, leading to more quick solutions ad infinitum..
We are still unsure about the actual affects of our current food sources as it might take a long while to see any adverse stuff for a long while, and furthermore, food is not just about nutritional value, we need to research the social and psychological too. E numbers/additives etc, it's all a bit like the tobacco stuff. We all know now that cigarettes are bad for you, go back to the 60's and they were a positive thing for stress, weight control, looking cool etc.
I mistrust science as much as I do organised religion, both in the same way. They both tell us bullshit stories that change over time. Non definitive by their very nature. So with genetically modified stuff, I tend to think, prove it beyond any doubt, or even close to no doubt, and then I'll embrace it.

Re: Welp its been nice knowing you guys
And that is the problem wether they are safe or not i for one will stay away from them as much as i can because its not as if they are grafting citrus its some pretty messed up stuff, i buy organic or from local farmers markets as much as possible i even grow a few things in my backyard and help out with a mates. Also Monsanto are a huge bunch of dicks as Soapy has alluded to selling crops that grow for one cycle or banning farmers reusing seeds, or having their gm crops float over to a decent farmers crops and them suing then suing them for it. Also noticed how thye have brought up a heap of seed companies and you cant get the variety that you use to be able to get.callmeslick wrote:I could never understand the problem with genetically-modded foods.
And i have about as much proof to prove they are bad as you do of proving they are safe i guess we will just have to wait 10/20 years to see what problems arise

not trying to prove anything....it's just the biochemist in me wondering how one foodstuff is better or worse for you, so long as the foodstuff is free of obvious toxins. Once you break the sugars and proteins down in your gut, you have the same nutritional building blocks. I guess my concern is that one thing the world needs is more food......hell, you've about 1 billion people undernourished or outright starving right now on the planet.
If crop yields can be increased via genetic modification, I'm all for it. Sure, I, who can afford it and have access to it, will get to be choosy about my foods, but, you know, I'll bet there are a few hundred thousand kids in Somalia who would gladly eat any genmod crops you have to spare.
and, of course, further testing, study etc are highly advisable. I am just leery of wholesale revulsion simply because one hears the words "genetically modified". Just my two cents.

My two centavos....
Hmmm, all that "modified food"?
My "unmodified" septic system?
A billion folks, pooping more?
Sounds like a bunch of crap to me....
Old Pudfark sez: " It's a proven fact. Damn near everything tastes better with Bar-B-Q sauce.... "
