I can point to the proposed changes by the White House to the tax code. I will pay quite a bit more, most people will not. Romneys plan does little but maintain the massive tax breaks Bush gave me, and he suggests giving me a few more gifts. Whoopie for me, really, really bad for the bulk of the population. You seem to imply that my proof is that I say so. Sorry, I am basing my points on the facts provided by either campaign and the copious analysis by the CBO and other economic analysts. It's all out there in black and white. Read up.

why would it be superior to do so on a closed, or restricted, market?

Well, they seem to have the same perspective on the individual's relationship to the state, and are pushing 'forward' to implement the structure necessary to realize that.
