Ah, I should've recorded one discussion I had while at Australia - local long distance truck driver explained to me in details, the advantages of AR-15 based vermin(read: kangaroo) control. A perfect sales pitch with hands-on experience to back up the talk :D After that, topic moved into the inner workings of american, non-syncronized gearboxes... ;)

But I can't see much wrong in deer/'roo hunting with "assault" rifles - targets are about the same weight/size as the originally intented ones.
All I ever wanted, was my own way

I don't know of anybody using them for deer here. Not even legal in Colorado. They're perfect for coyotes though. Sometimes 2-3 coyotes will come in, and a semi auto is just the ticket to put out their lives. After the first shot they scatter pretty fast.

Guns that can shoot fast, and is accurate to 500yds are scarce.

They are legal in Texas. Used to be, maybe still is, .30 caliber M1 carbines, cannot be used for deer hunting as they are not considered to be powerful enough for a humane kill. That's about the only exception, I'm aware of. I chose to not deer hunt about twenty something years ago. Though, I encourage all others who want to...

The .223 is not legal for big game here. The gun is fine in a bigger caliber.

I agree that a "Colorado" elk or deer rifle...it ain't, nor should it be.
Common factory calibers also include 9mm (aka silly mm) and 7.62x39.
That 7.62x39 is just under the 30-30 power threshold and still very marginal imho.

Now, an AR10 is a much different story in 7.62x51 or the same, .308 win. Doable in
my opinion.

Shooting "marmots" with any of them would be interesting....?

To be honest. I'd laugh at anybody using one for big game. It's not needed, and one shot should be plenty if you're any kind of hunter. Hell, I have no choice but one shot in a muzzleloader. :D

Coyotes are different though.

Not to many folks in Texas call our deer "big game"...with a straight face.
As you are well aware...yer "dear" are bigger and each to their own... ;)

I hunted for years with a single shot Thompson Center Contender Pistol.
A lot of the folks that I hunted with in the past...used to laugh at that.
I made a lot of "bucks" wagering on who could shoot the smallest group
at one hundred yards with their gun. In caliber .223 it was a "one holer" at
100 yards. In .35 rem, almost the same. It beat the hell out of carrying an
eight pound rifle... Nothing, I ever shot with it required more than one trigger pull.
I was pretty picky on how I chose to harvest my game. I'm certain, you are the same.

I owned a 10" AR15 with a collapsible stock back in the day...it had the same barrel length as my Thompson Center...I used the same handloads in both. Oh, and before folks start getting all upset on the barrel length...it had a six inch Choate flash suppressor on the barrel....and it needed it...every time fired was a 2 foot ball of flame.

I do admire your sporting use of black powder Buzz. :)

once again, the discussion of AR-15s is not, and shouldn't be, around HUNTING. Hunting is not a 2nd amendment right, it's a privilege, like driving a car. It is about public safety, and I'll repeat my challenge again: Find me examples where an AR-15 class weapon was both USED and NEEDED for personal protection.
Blathering on about hunting, the size of Texas deer(they are puny by all reports, sort of like most people there), hunting for elk, coyotes, rabbits or ducks is completely irrelevant.
