sadly,Pud, you confuse the word 'conservative' with 'diligent'. Not all diligent, hard-working people are conservatives, in fact, I would guess that the HUGE majority are Centrist Independants. Nice story though, and great example of both good karma and fate that he happened to run into the dude that owned the cajun restaurant.

I just don't understand why that young man ain't out borrowing money for a college education so he can qualify for a good job, that ain't there...sooooo he can default on his government loan and be penalized for not buying health care...which is the way you advocate.

anyone, in this day and age, who discounts the inherent value for a young person getting a college education is a FOOL. I can only hope that young man progresses in his education, once his income and family situation stabilize. The global economy will treat non-college grads VERY harshly in the coming decades. Simply supply and demand.

you know, Pud illustrates, above, one of my prime beefs with wannabe modern 'conservatives'(they aren't, but think they are, conservative....what they are is luddites). This whole idea of denigrating education, especially higher education is really about as bad an idea as could ever be foisted upon others. I hear the arguments, "I didn't need college" or "My dad put 10 kids through adulthood without college". Guess what? Those days are largely gone. Could one find a handful of examples bucking the trend? Sure. But this economy and the whole globalization thing is going to pit the whole world's supply of uneducated basic labor against one another, with incomes sinking to the low bid levels. Witness, call centers in Asia, assembly plants for a host of basic products overseas, on and on.......in the world our young people will enter, college level education and skills will be the ones that draw the pay. It happens already....I hear about this dreadful economy, yet every week, I get contacted a couple times by employers seeking my Master's level education and skillset. And, I'm not even seeking the work, they are seeking me! This type of disconnect will just continue as time goes forward. Those who denigrate education are doing nothing short of seeking to push our nation into third-rate status. Shame on them.

As I write this, my daughter got admitted to a program in the Indiana University system for Behavioral Science. I'm a proud dad!!

Nobody in there "right mind" would take on debt at that age with no/know certainty that they can pay it back. They'd have the Feds up their "collective" ass the rest of their life. Only a fool would bet their future on your lip and the way you and yours are running/ruining this country. This is such a wonderful place to "live" that the kid was headed to the Dairy Queen for a job. Maybe, he should of

sorry, Pud, but you're wrong. There is good and bad debt. Yes, some colleges are out to suck your money dry, but most reputable institutions provide pretty low cost loans and outright grants for those that need them. My daughter is getting $5500 per year as a grant, and the rest is borrowed at 8% and she doesn't have to start paying until 3 years after graduation(now, between you and me, Dad is paying the loan off at graduation, but wanted her to do the work and commitment).

Only a fool would bet their future on your lip and the way you and yours are running/ruining this country.

education is not 'betting your future', it is self-preparation for a REAL job, with REAL benefits and a REAL future. Making some sort of cheap political statement out of that reality is pretty predictable for you, but still idiotic by any measure.

because, as the story stated, he dropped out upon his moms death to care for his family. Anyone savvy and strong enough to do that is capable of continuing and succeeding at education, which in the long arm will serve him well. Especially, coupled with that level of determination to succeed.

how sweet of you to cheapen any specious argument you attempt to make with a personal dig. Hell, my past is my past, but certainly no more than a youthful diversion. Hardly anything past a blip in my adult life. My career success came from both work and quality education training me how to think and communicate well.
