Those were the days....No FDISK..you wuz F'd.....That was back when real men built computers...assigning IRQ's and Addresses....no PnP....My proudest moments..my first hdd was 10 meg....my first modem 300kb...the pain of the mouse & modem IRQ/Address conflicts....DOS Shell (el stinko)...the rude depredations to my cerveza fund for the newest/fastest computer stuff.....Stacks of 5.25 and 3.5 floppies....and after writing all that...I'll take things they way they are now....Chuck Yeager Air Combat for IL-2.....nope.

My first computer was an old 286, with DOS I believe was version 3?, was a monster, 6 mhz with a turbo that raised it to 7 mhz, and I had to put a fan next to the open tower, 2 mb ram, a massively huge 72 mb maxtor hard drive, I used it to play Duke Nukem, Swotl, the first version of Tetris (I had to learn cyrilic to play it) Wolfenstein 3d, and a lot of obscure games I have forgotten what they were called, also that version of word with the blue screen, took me months to figure out how to use it ( I didnt had the manual)
later I got my hand on 30 floppies with windows 3.0, upgraded to the holy grail: 4 mb ram, and a steep learning curve, so bad I had to go to DOS all the time to make it do what I wanted..he he, my first modem was 4 baud, I used it to go to BBS back then ( do you remember those Internet directory, that looked like a yellow pages phone book with the IP addresses of companies?), and my mother almost killed me when she got the phone bill, I had to work two months to pay the phone bill ( something around 200 bucks), Also I had to sell the modem to get some money too.
I had that puppy for almost eight years, I sold it for 600 bucks before I came to the US, and got a HP pavilion 250 mhz, with windows 95 and 48 mb ram, that thing was so fast I got dizzy the first time it booted.
lately I have switched to Linux ( kanotix), but when I use my home machine is still on XP.
I had to buy " linux for dummiess" to be able to figure out lots of utilities hidden by the GUI.

man, you feckers are old
(still using Usenet, regularly, and who would have been envious of Loco's 78 MB hard-drive back in the day.
I think my first PC had all of 30 MB storage)

Not that old...hehehe, at high school my first exam was on Unix punch cards took me almost a shoe box to punch my resume, I had the foresight to number them just in case they fell off the table.....DOS came much later.

I can remember entering med lab results onto punch cards. Let me tell you, reliable data transfer has come a LONG way from those days.
Re: Mexican Man Pleads Not Guilty in Murder of Border Patrol
Seems like I pre-date the both of you by a bit....my first computer was an 8088, with twin 5.25 floppy drives...first you had to install the op system...then continue loading floppies to bring up yer program...monochromatic screen...had a buddie who worked for Tx Instruments and he gave me the 10 meg harddrive...it died after one month..then gave me a twenty meg drive...(I can see the jokes coming)...I was top dog in the hood after that...no more loading floppies...just hit the power button and you was off and a running....I remember Swotl...with all the neat late war planes...it was a hoot to play...my first flt sim was F-15 Strike Eagle...I played the heck out of it....also, chuck yeager aircombat, Knights of the Sky, US Navy fighters, all the MScomflt sims...stumbled into IL-2 and have not looked back since....except when playing it..lol
Yup..the good old days...when memory was $40 a meg....I then had a 286, followed by a 386sx16, 386dx40 (damn good machine)...then the 486dx100...which whipped many of the early pentium platforms...then started on AMD chips to present...latest puter is Amd 955 o'clk to 3.6, 4gig of ddr3 1600, evga 8800gt superclocked, Win7 pro 64....and wait'n fer BOB/SOW and a new Dx 11 vid card....
Ya know, with all the "throat cutting" that goes on in this forum...I never take anything written to or about me, personally.....
and I know some of the others don't seem to either....this place just is...whut it is....
It might be fun/challenging for those that fly IL-2...to have "fur ball" fight on line sometime...complete with comms.....I can hear it now "Ruggbutt's on Soapy's six"....or the other way around....lol...all of this of course, with politics set aside.....
