American Exceptionalism

Post by Darkhorse »

Now we have demonstrable evidence that if you try to lead from behind, eventually the guys up front will stop looking back for instructions.
Government-coerced expression is a feature of dictatorships that has no place in a free country

Damn DH... ;)

ya went and ruined Slick's wet dream...all this time he thought it was 'Acceptionalism'.
Exceptionalism, me personally, I believe Obama only read as far as Except or Exception...got confused and took Slick's understanding.

however, I digress...one must first define the language:

Exceptionalism:
The perception that a country, society, institution, movement, or time period is unusual or extraordinary in some way and thus does not need to conform to normal rules or general principles.

Acceptionalism:
The belief in receiving (things) without necessarily earning them via work/action/deeds.

Btw, interesting link ya posted :)

great piece, DH. I think the author skipped a bit lightly over one part where the whole notion went off the rails: for two centuries, what was truly exceptional about the US was that our IDEAS were the primary influence upon the planet. Not sheer might, not bragging, not swaggering, not in any way the usual trappings of an Empire. IDEAS. Somehow, in the past 20 years or so, many have tried to link the notion of American Exceptionalism(which the author, I notes is very much a reality, in many ways) with the notion of FORCING OUR WILL upon the rest of the planet. That not only failed, miserably, but resulted in a backlash, which Obama has only partly been able to overcome in his term. I know you've been around ACWOS long enough to remember me on my soapbox stating that the economic tilt that was screwing the bulk of our working people was getting too severe and would lead to a general malaise. Well, friend, here we are. Now, will we give in to the urge from some towards Nationalism, and, essentially fascism or totalitarianism, if you scratch deep enough? Or, will the nation find the collective will to forge a modern Exceptionalism, based on those academic and intellectual strengths and tolerance the author notes? I don't know which way it will go, but we ARE at a turning point.

didn't even read the article, did you, Slappy? After you take the orderly's dick out of your mouth, ask him to read it to you. Slowly.

Remember this November, Sanders will already have burned, then Hillary will cry in DEFEAT.
