There it sat, watching me with it's beady little eyes. Staring, silently accusing me of... what? I had done nothing wrong.
I looked over at it, trying to stare it down. But it just sat there, unflinching, staring, staring. I looked away and pretended I was too busy to play its game, but it knew. And it knew that I knew that it knew. How annoying.
I tried to give it my Most Menacing Stare. It stared back, unmoved and unafraid, mocking me. Again I had to avert my eyes. I rubbed them and yawned, hoping that it would think I was getting bored and didn't care, but I cared, oh yes, I cared.
I slowly moved closer. Would it notice and bolt? No movement, but... was it playing with me? Taunting me? Would it edge away out of reach just as I got near? I casually glanced around, looking at nothing, while stealthily watching it out of the corner of my eye. It looked back, grinning inanely, as if to say, "I see you, and I don't care."
I made more near-imperceptible movements, slowly but surely closing the gap. It sat there, sure of itself, full of itself. Just you wait.
The sun meandered across the sky, and the shadows grew long. I blended with the shadows, and drew closer. It was almost time. I quickly went over the plan in my mind, for once it was in motion there was no turning back. One chance, no mistakes. I could feel the adrenalin coursing through my veins; the anticipation was almost unbearable. Calm down, easy now, easy...
It was still staring, but it was no longer focused on me. I have you now. I tensed, ready to spring. Breathe.
In a sudden explosion of movement, I struck. My right hand closed around its neck, and I triumphantly held it aloft, captured, helpless. Was that fear I now saw in those eyes?
I quickly ripped off the gold foil wrapper and bit its ears off. Chocolate bunnies never tasted so good.
