both. The crackers are sometimes needed on the claws, but usually patient whacking with the mallet will do the job. The body meat is just picked out. Now, if you just envision the crab claws as Pud or Slappy, the mallet will pulverize the claw to the point where I'll be picking bits of crab and shell off the walls and window in the kitchen.
