Somewhat?
Yes the article says a 3rd Carrier task force has been sent to the gulf. a carrier task force consists of a Nimitz class aircraft carrier and her escorts. the Nassau is an LHA or Tarawa Class Ambibious assault ship, while it does carry aircraft they are mostly helicopters and a scattering of Osprey and Harriers. her mission is not designed as an attack Carrier but as a support for an Amphibious landing.

My younger brother actually serverd on Nassau LHA-5. I served on her sister the Belleau Wood LHA-3

I guess my point, Cuda, is that these sort of deployments occur frequently. I've lost count of the times in the past 5 years in which someone comes along and says, 'we're going into Iran'. Hopefully, the collective wisdom that has avoided such a moronic move will still hold up.......

agreed. in 1981 while I was on board Belleau Wood we were deployed to the South Pac and IO with a Discretely sceduled detour to the Persian Gulf to help with a certain group of people being held in the Tehran Hilton, but Alas Regan took office and they canceled the trip for some unkown reason ;)

ships will deploy about every 2-3 years on average, this may have been a scheduled deployment by Nassau. probably her last before decomissioning as she is scheduled this year or next. Belleau Wood was decommissioned in 2007 and sunk as a target a year or so later. this may be nothing out of the ordinary
