Watts Up With That?

R-12 hasen't been used in Automobiles since the Mid 1980's.
Hmmm
The new replacement for R-12 is R-134a which is not a Freon, but a Suva. R-134a is less efficient than R-12 and operates at a higher pressure. The net results of these two factors will be more horse power from the car's engine to yield the same cooling. More horsepower means lower fuel economy and poorer engine performance.

Along with the other stuff you mentioned, aren't we paying a higher price financially and possibly physically?

Why can't they build a more efficient pump and/or compressor that uses less horse power for the R-134 system?
And why can't the ECM deliver better performance?

Has to do with heat absorption.

Hell, butane and propane are great refrigerants EXCEPT for the fact that they burn so nicely.

Another downside to R-134 is that the coils have be clean for it to work at the best capacity.

BOHICA in the name of green.

Because DuPont owns the patent on R-134 and it is interesting timing that when DuPont's patent on R-12 finally ran out, R-12 became EVIL!!!

Follow the money. ;)
