Pennsylvania is tough to change. First off, getting Independent candidates has been rendered nearly impossible. The number of petition signatures you have to get is staggering, and the manner in which they have to be collected is economically impossible, unless you wish to fork over hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The problem is the sheer power of the two major parties. The Dems have pure machines in Pittsburgh and Philly and the Republicans control everything else(oversimplification, but close to reality). There is so much pay to play, they all deserve to be booted, but as I pointed out, it is extremely difficult. In a way, it IS a microcosym of the nation's issues as a whole, but possibly worse to effect change into.
