spring for the Denon. I'm running it through a MM only pre(Hagerman Bugle). You won't regret it, if your
table has a medium to heavy arm design.

My brother is thinking about a Bugle. You get good results with only 40dB of gain? Hmm.

Are you using batteries for your Bugle?

yup, pain in the ass, but quiet as hell. 40dB works quite well with every MM cartridge I've thrown at it:
an AT97e, Grado Black, Grado Red, Denon DL-160, all work well. I NEVER have to crank the 'Sui past 40% point on the volume knob, and I run with no loudness or other boost/filter, just flat power. If one wishes to
move to a LOMC, Hagerman has a model that handles that for under $650, if I recall correctly. The guy does very efficient, solid designs that are pure simplicity. The Bugle is a 3X6 board on 4 feet, with two 9 volts running it. One set of inputs, outputs and a ground. That's it, and it will trash a few offerings from Cambridge, Bellari, Parasound and others.
