BTW the argument of saving US soldiers is BS. Firstly because there must not have been so many valid japanese to put up a fight, nor would they have plenty of weapons or training to use them. Secondly because russian troops were already on their way to invade japan. My ex' grandfather was actually a russian soldier sailing towards japan on a soviet warship when the war ended.
The A bomb had two purposes, none of which included saving US soldiers:
1/ Make japan surrender before the ruskies could land there.
2/ Show the Ruskies that you have the A bomb & are willing to use it.

I disagree with what ya said above, Nic. Have a sense of humor fer my remarks below...
I understand yer remark about "saving U.S. soldiers"...mostly understand it, because there were not any French soldiers to save. Any Ruski's heading that way....? It would'a taken them many months to get there...as in...What was their transport? The war would have gone on a lot longer. Hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians...would have starved to death...waiting on the Russians...to arrive.
BTW, starving them out was an option that was seriously considered. The U.S. Navy, not the Russian Navy or French Navy, already had a blockade in effect. Hence, an argument was made for the use of the A bomb. BTW, does Dresden weigh heavily on yer conscious?
On yer "2/"...well yup, we showed them Ruskies that we had one and it worked twice. However, the last seventy years...have indicated to everybody, we ain't willing to use it. Then again...in the same time period...neither has anybody else. That may not hold true to the future...with the advent of the "muzzie" jihad's"... I'll will give you French a nod of respect, y'all have at least raised yer hand to be counted on....and stood, albeit temporarily, on your own...to demonstrably do something about the "islamic terrorist" thingy.
Now, here's a proper slap...
It's a good/promising thing to know...that the "Canookians" and there solitary C-130 are temporarily available for the coming "middle east" war/debacle. Expect them to lead the charge and for R_D, to beat his chest in pride.

what coming middle east war/debacle? You mean, like the one that's been going on since I was born and a few hundred years prior?

The one that's gonna glow in the dark.....fer ages.
The one that's been going on fer the last couple thousand years and yer birth? Had nothing to do with it, not to mention, anything meaningful in yer education or life.
Here's a hint:
Pakistan asked to send 30,000 troops to Saudi Arabia
Reports out of Pakistan indicate that
Saudi Arabia has asked Pakistan to dispatch 30,000 troops to the Kingdom as part of a bilateral defense agreement that's currently being formulated in a flurry of visits and meetings between defense and military officials from the two countries. Pakistan's prime minister Nawaz Sharif said:
"In view of current challenges, there is a need to further strengthen defense cooperation between the two countries and a new era of strategic relationship needs to start."
The particular "current challenges" facing Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are the rise of Iran, and Iran's rapprochement with the United States.
Both countries fear that Iran will develop nuclear weapons and that, in the end, the West will do nothing to prevent it. Indeed, one of the jobs of the Pakistani troops will be military training for the Saudi army, a function that was formerly performed by American troops.
I'd post the link...however, yer known for not reading them....especially your own posted links. So, if'n yer curious? Google it.

sounds like classic nuclear deterrence(MAD) posturing. Note that we've had this with Russia and China since we both were kids, and no one nuked anyone yet.

I guess my ex' grandad was on some kind of transport ^^
He was sailing towards japan when the war ended. Or so he told his granddaughter. Feel free to believe it or not I don't care.
Besides, it's a well known fact that hirodouche was frantically trying to get a peace treaty before the bombs were dropped.

my overall take on the whole matter was that after years of working on perfecting those initial handful of bombs, they were going to drop at least ONE someplace. I actually accept the logic Pud offers about saving lives of US soldiers. You have to realize, Nic, that the US had paid a really high toll taking several small islands, and the idea that the Japanese were going to simply lay down and give up the home island, when they fought to the last man on the small outlying ones can be seen as a stretch. The rest of the stuff you speak of is largely speculation, and given the times and the extent of communications being slower and more incomplete than it is today, the logic behind the bombs is solid.

Well...most all things...pretty much known. The A bomb indisputably ended the war. Quick.

Well either you decide to believe the official history or you decide to believe what makes sense to you according to what you think you know. To each their own.

No argue from me...
I know, the world knows, we dropped the A bomb twice and the war with Japan ended.
