My family never owned slaves or prospered from them. The barrel business sounds interesting...staves beat slaves.

Great grand parents were "share croppers" till WWII when
everyone was needed for the war effort. Even us.
Share cropper is another term for slavery albeit without visible chains.

When it comes to the treatment of native North Americans
all pale in comparison to the Canadians.
Their forced re-education of the children and the brutal
sadistic treatment of the same is the stuff of legend.
