can you point me to a time when it ever did, on a short-term basis?
The official unemployment rate may also be dramatically inaccurate based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics method of calculation.

If the government was still calculating the unemployment rate using the same criteria and methods that had last been used during the Clinton administration, the “official” unemployment rate today would be closer to 18%
I've been harping, on these pages, about the undercount of unemployment since way before the recession, so you aren't surprising me with that one. The problem is the overall change in the nature of our economy that has occurred. Much of this sea-change came since 1980, when a new attitude toward the prominence of short-term corporate profit, to the detriment of long-term growth planning, took hold. To put any of this stuff onto politics is really short-sighted, as there are more powerful forces at work than the Congress or the President, when it comes to money......

I'll end my little trip down Memory Lane with this thread. Note, Dawg advises bailing on the stock market back when the Dow was around 8500. Dawg, if you're reading this one, I really hope for your sake that you didn't take your own advice and at least partially took the advice I was giving you....... :P
Another item worth noting is that Happy has entered by this time. Still stupid as ever, but notice that he isn't all that upset with Obama at this point. Saves his vitrol for the recently deceased Ted Kennedy, in truly classy fashion.

you're right, Dawg, this place DOES have lame smilies......

Hey slick remember my predictions about the economy? Its almost the last quarter, better sit tight.
a quick reminder of the sharp economic mind which is Dawg. Hope he's well, and noticed the Dow pass 18000 this afternoon. When he
predicted gloom, any day, above, the Dow was under 9000. :P
