"The America Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money." -- Alexis de Tocqueville

Robert Heinlein wrote:There has grown up in the minds of certain groups in this country the notion that because a man or corporation has made a profit out of the public for a number of years, the government and the courts are charged with the duty of guaranteeing such profit in the future, even in the face of changing circumstances and contrary to public interest. This strange doctrine is not supported by statute or common law. Neither individuals nor corporations have any right to come into court and ask that the clock of history be stopped, or turned back.

Liberty has never come from the government. Liberty has always come from the subjects of government. The history of liberty is the history of resistance. The history of liberty is a history of the limitation of governmental power, not the increase of it. -- Woodrow Wilson

wow, a quote-fest!!
The one that comes to mind for me, when I observe a nation in which:
1. 15% of the public questions the citizenship of the elected president.
2. 17% of the public thinks that President is a Muslim
3. 40% of the adults cannot name their congressional representatives
4. Folks whine like they do on here about 'government' oppression under the US system
5. 1% or less of the population owns 92% of the wealth
is this:

Valid question since Hawaii issues birth certificate copies that anyone can request, even if they weren't born there. Only Obama can get the one that will shut up all the people questioning his citizenship. He refuses to do so. Where there's smoke there's fire.
2. 17% of the public thinks that President is a Muslim
Born into a family that has a Muslim father you're Muslim. Just like if your mother is Jewish you're a Jew. Can't change that.
The others, I agree.

and trying to discuss things with you reminds me of a quote my old man taught me :D
never argue with an Idiot, he'll just drag you down to his level and club you with experience

more government quote, since we are having a quote fest
Thomas Jefferson wrote:Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.
this one is directed at the President directly
Irene Peter wrote:Just because everything is different doesn't mean anything has changed.
