I dunno, I think to some extent, both Fatman and Nic are correct. Most major problems are complex, and both of them told part of the story. There are probably quite a few more 'parts' of the whole story, involving crap going back centuries. Bottom line in the here and now, though, is Fatman's point of why have a ton of kids when you can't feed yourself? And the subplot to that is that they have normal human urges, and cannot afford contraception. Thus, when some bunch of moralist nitwits, doing 'God's word, block donations of contraceptives, you see where the problems involve a lot more than the obvious suspects......

I Think maybe Slick is talking about the Catholic church and their attitude to contraception. Which has had a huge effect in Africa as have other missionary groups of other Christian and non Christian sects.

Fatman, being Australian is racist by nature. Most Aussies are and they can't help it ( they all blame the Abos )

This all benefits the West. The more people in conflict areas in Africa, the more we can sell outdated weapon systems, if they were not having large families this market wouldn't have a client base.

More importantly, and Fatman missed this point. People in poor countries need to have large families. Why? Well because usually most of your kids don't survive to adulthood, and if they do, you need them to work to provide for the large extended family ( Many Aussies come from Irish ancestry, and should know this ). We have the luxury of education and a decent healthcare system to prevent the same thing happening in our worlds.

In fact the people that went West in the US of A, many of them were shit poor European immigrants ( at least half of the 7th cav at The Bighorn spoke Dutch or German ) and they tended to have large families too so that enough would survive to keep the family going. Every culture has it. Just now we are all so fucking "modern" we tend to forget this.

Point but from what i have read on the matter at least they provided for them selves and didnt just sit there with their hand out waiting for others to wait on them. Look at the Asians they can tend to have big families and yet they seem to do all right might not be the lap of luxury but hey its the third world and they can feed themselves, well maybe not north korea but communism can explain that
