Depends on how you pick a team, how loyal you are to it? You have the option to pick any team you want. Even the best team.

I've been a big NFL fan my entire life.
I went years and years without having a favourite team. I would sit down and watch games regardless of who was playing and not really root for any team.
I just enjoyed the sport.

Then one day I turned on a game and started watching a guy named John Riggins. And Joe Theismann. And Art Monk. And Gary Clark........
I've been a Redskins fan ever since.

Although this whole 'local' thing is relative. Yes, I did live in New England for a decade, but I grew up nearer to Washington, Baltimore and Philly
(all about equal distance, none really nearby). I adopted the Pats in the 1970's because they were woeful to the point of hilarious. One year, they didn't finalize the contract to rent a stadium for the season until mid-August. They would routinely lose to OJ Simpson's Buffalo Bills by dozens of points.
It wasn't until about two decades that they became a respectable team and another decade before they became a powerhouse.
