Maybe you're confusing something you read about the Eisenhower admin with the current one - back then 50% + of every one of the federal budgets while he was president went to defense.

He shares his long term view of economy, his views on excessive military/industrial spending, international involvement, and the need for deficit spending to make the nation stronger over the long haul. Yet, the loons on the right wish to project onto him the silly stuff such as Pud lays out above. Stunning. And wrong.

I like this quote, when put into the context of how our defense policy changed immediately afterward.... we took our massive budget on conventional weapons, and turned it into a massive budget for extraordinarily expensive offensive nuclear power. Missile subs, MRBMs, ICBMs, cruise missiles, interceptors etc. Even Canada made an attempt to participate in developing defensive weapons as part of this plan, and failed terribly to produce a world class interceptor when it threatened to consume their entire defense budget. Nice try though....

All that reminds me of the years my uncle spent in Labrador,Goose Bay commanding an F-102 Squadron to protect the Canadians while they went out and clubbed baby seals to death....yup, them were the good old days.
