but, if you have long-term contractual and pension obligations, and the money dries up, what to do? Stop spending on cops and firemen? Stop spending to try to get industry back to town, or on infrastructure maintenence. Given the massive importance of Detroit to ALL OF MICHIGAN and the long-term economic health of the state, the thing to do was use state monies to bridge the gap. That didn't happen.

I thought i read about the rest of the state being pissed at Detroit for already taking the lions share of money

the truth is, Fats that Obama is trying to avoid that same thing in the country. He has been espousing forward thinking and diversification along with education and infrastructure spending, in order for the nation NOT to follow that same trajectory. And, of course, the whiners complain every time he does, without offering a viable option.
