in terms of personal liberty, in other words, the freedom to conduct one's life in the manner of one's own choosing, the French have always been at the forefront. It started with Rousseau and other likeminded philosophers, and carries on to this day. The French, in my limited experience, have far less tolerance for
aristocracies and oligarchs than even the Americans in most respects.

I think the post from a blog or FB that Fatman posted shows what modern Lybians aspire too, ie the American ideal which was great in it's time but is now more like American Idol which, as we all know, is shit.
