What Recession? Justice Department Spent Nearly Half a Million on Refreshments

If the 2008 financial crisis caused the nation to tighten its belt, the Justice Department didn’t get the memo.
The federal agency spent about $490,000 on food and beverages at 10 conferences, including $16 apiece for muffins, more than a dollar an ounce for coffee and $32 per person on snacks, according to a new report from the Justice Department’s inspector general.
The half-a-million-dollar tab represented more than 10 percent of the $4.4 million total cost of the events that were held between October 2007 and September 2009.

“Some conferences featured costly meals, refreshments, and themed breaks that we believe were indicative of wasteful or extravagant spending – especially when service charges, taxes, and indirect costs are factored into the actual price paid for food and beverages,” the report reads, citing a $76-per-person lunch at one workshop.
The inspector general made 10 recommendations to improve oversight and minimize conference costs, all of which were accepted by the Justice Department.
Republicans shook their head in disbelief.
"$16 muffins and $600,000 for event planning services are what make Americans cynical about government and why they are demanding change," said Sen. Chuck Grassley, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee.
"The Justice Department appears to be blind to the economic realities our country is facing," he said. "People are outraged, and rightly so. The Inspector General's office just gave a blueprint for the first cuts that should be made by the (deficit-cutting) supercommittee."

$4.4 million? Do you realize that we pay that much in interest ont the debt in, like, 40 minutes? Once again, focus on the minute and wait until the really serious issues bite you in the ass. And this, to be sure, is minute. Oh, and my absence, as always, was preceded by the explanation of my fishing trip in VA, where I don't bring a laptop, and really don't do much other than focus on the sea, the bluefish, the egrets, etc.

As for 'responding', what's the point? I've read the whole of your posts and all you are doing is focusing on trivia, that all told doesn't amount the 1/10 of 1% of the annual cost of government, and most of the items carry over more than one year. This nation has serious, serious problems. The entire economic structure of the Western World has serious, serious problems. Your side of the political spectrum continues to insist on making the solutions even less possible than could be the case. Thanks a bunch.

Doesn't give a feck about $4.4m and clearly can't figure out that by cutting stupid crap like this as well as many other programs that it will reduce the deficit. Because if you spend less, you owe less. Then again, as an employee I don't expect Slick to understand real business "stuff" like those of us who hire dumbf**ks like him.

Rugg, you simple twit: I am not arguing that saving every dime ought to be a goal. I am just arguing that far too many focus on little stuff and don't address FAR larger issues. You can save 4 million per day for a year, and you don't reach a savings equal to 1% of the budget. And, the budget is out of balance to the tune of over 22%.

It's the same attitude from lefties like you. You claim nothing can be done but you just don't get that you have to start somewhere. 4.4 million dollars saved is 4.4 million dollars that the taxpayers don't have to pay. Cut the extravagant health care that congress gets. Cut their pensions unless they serve for 20 years. Cut this, cut that and next thing you know you've taken a bite out of the deficit.

I wouldn't expect you to understand that. As a business owner and someone who hires employees I do.

OK, Ruggie, what you are saying is that if your business is in serious economic trouble, you waste your time focusing on whether you should buy your guys a cup of coffee in the morning, as opposed to looking at the bigger picture? You see, no one has the time or the focus to do everything. That's simple humanity. So, the smart manager, business owner or executive looks at the core issues, and doesn't worry about micromanaging the trivia. Going back to the Holder example, while 4 million was spent on receptions, it is safe to assume those receptions were a routine part of business, so what waste was in the process might have come to what, 10%, tops? Thus, you all are getting worked up over a matter of, at most, a half-million dollars of waste(which has been addressed, by the way), but none of you seem concerned that an idiotic tax cut back in 2000, coupled with a pair of unfunded wars, an aging population and a recession have us running around $1.8 Trillion in the red, annually. Astounding.
