Bobbies told not to arrest
A CASH-strapped police force has ordered its bobbies to slash the number of criminals they arrest — to save money.
Staffordshire cops will use the PHONE to deal with crime reports when possible and will respond to fewer incidents than before.
Bosses made the controversial decision after nearly £500,000 was spent on management consultants.
The move means problems like anti-social behaviour and neighbour disputes will be dealt with by local councils rather than by cops.
Chief Constable Mike Cunningham admitted that nicking crooks was the best course but said his force had no choice.
Every arrest creates eight hours of expensive admin work.
And more offenders will be given fixed penalty notices instead of being formally arrested.
One angry resident said on an internet forum: "What next, murder and get let off on the phone?"
