Sticking to their guns: Marines place $22.5M order for the Colt .45 M1911

It’s been called the greatest handgun ever made, and it has barely changed since 1911, when the legendary John Browning designed it especially for the U.S. Military.
And now, the Colt .45 M1911 is making a big comeback, now that the U.S. Marines have placed a $22.5 million order for the Connecticut-made pistols.

"You can’t beat a .45 cartridge," Jack Lewis, firearms director for Cowan's Auctions, told FoxNews.com. "Some things are hard to replace," he said.

Colt Defense, based in Hartford, Conn., will supply as many as 12,000 of the 200,000 U.S. Marines with semi-automatic, tan-colored M45 Close Quarter Battle Pistols, and they will include spare parts and logistical support.

Hk45. Great cartridge, let's put it in a modern weapon. I have a Colt 1911; amazing design considering it's age, but there's more reliable out there now IMO.

How many HK45's are used in actual competition or combat application?
Not many, if any.

The why of that has to do with "trigger pull".
Two stage, double/single action triggers are nearly
impossible to master. Not to mention, controlling trigger over travel.

One reason Glocks are so popular....they found a way to do both.

The change in 1985 to the silly millimeter (9mm) was political and
only benefited Italy. US Military handgun history has gone from 11mm to 9mm
and back to 11mm and then 9mm and now finally, the Marines, back to 11mm.

Nothing against the HK....they got the caliber right. :P

I'd prfer some kind of dao for pocket carry (I don't carry but if I did...), and cocked and locked or light dao / LEM (glock -like) for combat. I really disliked the M9 and agree with your assessment of trigger quality. But the Hk is just a more modern, more durable pistol, at least that's what I gather from various tests. Probably would need less armory attention.
