now, I don't know if Pud is smiling for the same reasons I am, but here are mine. Anyone who buys into this has no concept of how
America is, really no clue at all. I suspect Pud and others here share my situation. Both of my homes are in rural settings, and my nearest town in Virginia has a population of 600 people. I can GUARANTEE you all that no cameras are mounted there, or anywhere else in the county with the exception of NASA/NOAA property on Wallops Island(with good reason to be THERE). If, indeed, some agency attempted to mount a camera in, say Parksley or Atlantic or Onancock, it would likely be shot to pieces within a matter of hours. This paranoia is just that, paranoia, written by loons to scare the bejeepers out of other loons. For the record, I know two employees of Abraxas, and 3 more at Mitre(look that one up, same line of work, probably even more stealthy). They do surveillance, encryptation and serious computer geek national security stuff. They don't and can't talk about anything past generalities. I can assure you that none of those individuals would have anything to do with something so sinister, or so utterly stupid as what that article suggests. America is a HUGE country, with massive amounts of rural land. Such a plan would be a flat-out wasted effort.

I'm not sure what exactly you are replying to. I never said people wanted to put cameras in the whole US and control all the place. As a matter of fact I just posted the link cause I found it interesting (for whatever reason).
However, what makes you think that some specificd networks of cameras (airports, trainstations, road gates and whatever) couldn't be networked and interfaced with face recognition algorythms?

I'm not saying it is impossible, Nic, but that to pull it off in the US would require a truly massive network, most of it in extremely remote locations with folks who take personal privacy/liberty seriously.

All of what Slick said.
Plus this lil bit.....
Nic, do you really have any idea?
How long it would take?
For facial recognition software to "run" and give you a match?
What size system, speed and human resources to monitor it?
Geezus....Keerist....some folks desperately want a sit down and a do nothing job...
It ain't doable. Despite whut ya see on TV.
And yes Nic...it is used somewhat in Las Vegas at the casino's...even then, it's so-so and very expensive...and not worth a shit, if they don't already have yer piture on file.
Any who? Carry On....

We already have more CCTV and spycams in the UK, than anywhere else in the world per capita. And the cops can't catch jack shit.
However it does make great cheap reality TV.
