This is the reasonable path to a permanent solution

It's decades overdue.

How to rebuild the mental health system in America

"It is time to rebuild America's mental health care system, and to build it stronger than ever. As I have said before on this site, the current system is shattered, on its knees and a profound national embarrassment.

The tragedies in Aurora, Colorado and in Newtown, Connecticut and the shooting of Congressman Gabrielle Giffords and President Reagan and thousands of murders around the country might well have been prevented if the mental health care system were appropriately robust and paid special attention to those at risk for violence.

"Six days ago 20 children were killed by yet another mentally ill man who I believe we will learn was inadequately treated. Enough is enough. Mental illness is rampant in our society, and we have no real system with which to fight it."

I don't agree with all of what the Doc says here...though, I agree with a lot of it.
We either all need to pony up and pay for it or treat'em like zombies...just sayin'

I agree Pud, and have actually actively been advocating for this for years. Started my professional career working in research at a State Mental Hospital, and have known folks in my life whose lives were affected by mental health issues and victimized by people with mental health issues. The problem is the money.....like so many things in our society which are right, a lot of people don't think they should pay their share for them. Insurers don't want to incur all the costs involved with more coverage, States don't want to increase the budget for adequate care, same for the Feds. Right now, in the US, the prison system is the largest single housing resource for the mentally ill. Every bit as outlandish in such a wealthy country as the gun problems and healthcare coverage in general. Maybe, we'll get around to dealing with this issue along with those others.....sadly, I doubt it.

Pudfark, I suggest you read up about which "mental diseases" had been invented in soviet russia, so you can watch when they show up in the US in the months/years to come ;)

I agree.
Sadly, money has always been the issue.
In Texas, it's against the law to incarcerate "mental cases" with criminals, no exceptions. However, our law doesn't say anything about "convicted criminal mental cases" being incarcerated with other criminals. A loop hole.

Sit back and watch (I have since the 70's, five decades) them talk and do nothing.
Especially now (economic issues) they won't/can't. This will be forgotten about and as a certainty, will happen again. This feeble contrived attempt at more "gun regulation" is the temporary "solution" to assuage the public fears and avoid the un-affordable fix. Republicans are just as guilty as the Democrats.

When I worked my specialty was "Crisis Intervention"...meaning when my folks encountered mental folks, I was the one to handle it. I never had to hurt any of them. Some were tasered, none were beat or harmed in any other way. The shame of it all was...you took them to a facility...they got a butt load of thorazine and were released back on the street in a matter of hours...with a sore ass and a prescription..
Wash, Rinse, Dry, Fold and repeat. I saw a lot of the same folks repeatedly.

We all need to find a reasonable way to fund a medical solution.

Well, whole generations of kids diagnosed with fake psychological disorders & high up on mind altering chemicals sureley won't help the situation. There are already enough nutcases that should be treated seriously.

It reminds me of that link from a few months back when a mom was fighting in court to keep custody of her son which the state wanted to put on some kind of mind altering medication... creepy.

Kids today are growing up playing violent video games all day. They need to get outside and play sports instead.

Guns are not the problem.

Everything is done to remove parents from this role. Starting with making women work, involving school in everything & so on.
