With his portly belly and a fondness for a brandy-fuelled spin on the sleigh, Santa Claus is hardly the picture of health or safety.
Now his wild ways are catching up with him, with calls for a radical overhaul of his bad boy image. A study by Monash University public health expert Dr. Nathan Grills found Santa could be promoting obesity and speeding — and damaging millions of lives.

im ashamed to admit it, but yes, i do go way too fast in the sky with my reindeer powered sleigh....far too many others i see as well, makes it dangerous up there

Do you really think that a fat santa speeding through the sky on a sleigh epitomises traditional values?

While rural doctor-patient ratios continue to fall short of those in metropolitan areas and medical students apply for new bonded university places, Dr Grills, 27, says that working in the country is not the isolated, thankless role it is often made out to be.
"People have this ill-conceived idea that the country is a horrible place to work," said Dr Grills, who returned to his home district with his wife, Claire, after they graduated from Monash University in 2002.
"You're involved in a community, from Christmas carols on Christmas Day to knowing a lot of the patients and staff inside and outside the hospital."
