I'm saddened by this result. It represents a shameful retreat to a smaller mindset, unshackled from empathy, decency or even just intellectual engagement with complex issues. It has been apparent throughout that the people most served by the EU are fundamentally misinformed about what it is and how it works, not least by decades of vile slander from a plutocrat class that holds much of the responsibility for the actual struggles they face. The richest people in this country have managed to convince the poorest that their problems are not due to the ugly manoeuvrings of the British political system, but bendy bananas and meddling foreigners.

The decision would be easier to take had the Leave campaign not disgraced itself at every turn. Their utter contempt for the intelligence of the British public has been evident from Day 1. In their repeated utterance of statements they knew to be false, in their craven misrepresentation of facts and personal endorsements to their own ends, and in their ugly, disingenuous insistence on focusing on EU immigrants, who they know have repeatedly been proven a net gain to the country and whose numbers are not really reducible by any deal a future British state may seek to strike within the outer EU anyway. This might be why they reverted to simply showing images of huddled non-European brown people or spitting out the words 'Turk' and 'Serb', as if either were an airborne disease.

The campaign always carried the dog-whistle innuendo long pushed by this country's right wing press, but eventually devolved into the kind of alarming, full-bore racism that I genuinely thought British people could be relied upon to reject.

I am disgusted by this result and the mandate it gives to the most loathsome political elements of this nation. I am saddened by what it says about the British people, what it means for the protection of essential services and workers' rights, and the truly horrifying implications that the re-imposition of military borders could have on the streets of Northern Ireland.

Britain awoke today a poorer, crueller and more dangerous country, and could remain so for decades to come.

All so that a handful of cranks, bigots and rank opportunists could get their hands on slightly fancier Westminster stationery for a few years "

ok, Pud, in a world with instantaneous worldwide communication, money transfer, stock trading and shipping networks, how do you suggest we go forward WITHOUT accepting globalization? It's going to be the reality, whether some nitwits in Britain or elsewhere wish to hide like scared little turtles in their shell. Avoiding the realities of economic progress is PRECISELY how the Islamic world got stuck in the 14th century and hasn't been able to catch up yet.

With this "instantaneous worldwide communication, money transfer, stock trading and shipping networks" has come the debt and fraud with no/know accountability. Then 'unlimited and un-vetted' immigration and slaughter...more of it coming unrelentingly. Then ya factor in Greece, Ireland and Iceland....and you get this:
