we're talking about reconciling, fast, behind some agreed-upon combination of either 20% less government
spending or a 25% tax hike(the extremes, if one chose all cuts or all hikes). Wallowing through another 10 years of dithering, while folks get all riled up over the President's Birth Certificate, World Financial Conspiracy,
Communists in the Cabinet, or the noble leadership of Hugo Chavez, not to mention unresolvable social issue differences, will doom us.

Now, I'd appreciate any input as to solutions to this problem. Just lay off the blame Obama, blame either party bullshit. Solutions. Anyone with a brain knows a compromise has to be struck, but which one?

a few months back, ole Glenn held this big rally in Florida. At such, he claimed that he was going to shortly produce, and broadcast, his solution to the national debt/annual deficit issue. And, he assured us, no one was going to really like it. Now, liking that claim and giving Beck the benefit of the doubt, I've been waiting for his plan. Did he announce it?

Reagan cut taxes! Our economy built a fire under its' ass and came back strong. It only took Clinton and the Bush boys about 15 years to get it back on its' ass and the latest buffoon seems that he is trying to bury the it.

Proven fact that you can not tax your way into prosperity. I don't foresee the present regime cutting anything anytime soon. He'll just write more hot checks for us and our kids to cover.

actually, Reagan set the nation up for most of the subsequent problems. IE--too small a tax base to support the growth of programs in place, with far too little cut. A lot of the 'Reagan prosperity' was sort of a sham,
when you factor in average worker's earnings for inflation. Most of the 'robust growth' one hears about would have happened once Vietnam and the oil crises of the 1970's had been absorbed by the economy.

oh, and Wullie, you covered the Obama administration criticism, but still, no suggestion of how you would handle the deficit. Cut taxes? Now the deficit becomes larger, in a still-recovering economy. You plan on using inflation to cover the difference? What would you cut from the budget? Nonetheless, kudos for giving the question a bit of thought......

something to ponder: how, exactly, does the national economy(which evolves slowly and steadily in a cyclical fashion) in any way reflect, or even get much affected by, who is President at the time? IMHO, a President can have effects a decade or so after he leaves office, but in real time, he's reacting to what has already long been created. In a very real way, Reagan caused a lot of problems with the whole concept of removal of government regulation of commerce, and benefitted by the timing of his election. The cycle was going to go upwards for 5 years or more had we elected Bonzo the Chimp as President, the way I see the economy working.

Shit can the liberal spenders and vote in "conservatives"....this November. That's for a start....

Then shit can the New Federal Health Care....

No new Immigration Laws, just enforce the hell out of the old ones...

Now that the present administration is coming to grips with the fact that the STIMULUS program stimulated nothing other than the debt that it is now time to make the poor people that have a job lose more of their income to fund the fuck up and future fuck ups on tap with higher taxes?

I have a dumb ass stepson that is the perfect future democrat. He is 22 years old, has no HS diploma nor any desire to get one. So he's safe from the military in his eyes. He also has no job nor any intention of getting one. He spent a year with me, stole us blind, had several warrants out for traffic tickets that "weren't his fault" and he left TX and went back to MO before I killed him and was living on his un-employment benefits from getting FIRED at a part time job at Blockbuster. He called his mom last week asking for money because the tit dried up. She didn't give him any. He'll be sure and praise the gov't that GIVES him more money to fuck off. Where he's at in MO there are really no jobs to be had unless you drive a truck. He has no desire to do that. I hunted hard up there seven years ago for work before the economy fell on its' ass and couldn't find anything that would support a family other than trucking. I brought my wife to Texas and we're both working to make ends meet. She was willing to uproot and move to TX rather than see me back in a damn truck.

I don't relish the thought of giving up more of my money so it can be fucked off on frivolous liberal feel good policies.

As for cutting government? CUT THAT SON OF A BITCH! I work for the largest employer in the state of Texas. I work for the Texas Highway Dept. It is like ANY government run program. It is bloated, out of touch, and the idiots running it have never held a job in the private sector. The Federal Government is just a bigger example of where I work. My bosses brag about how much more they spend than other sections. My boss has worked for TxDOT for 42 years. He's 61 years old. "SPEND IT, THEY'LL GIVE US MORE BY GOD!!" is his motto. Saving money is a foreign concept. TxDOT did save some money this year with a hiring freeze. Then they spent the money they saved ($2.5M) by having an outside company evaluate the organisation and tell them the same thing we've been saying for years. Those of us in the trenches are stretched pretty thin. I ain't bitching, I've got a steady paycheck and doing the work of two and sometimes three people makes the day go by faster.

....finally, your personal examples are interesting, but you're being gulled if you think you're the one that would be the primary target of a tax hike, or that your stepkid is the typical recipient of government benefits.

refineries are ok, but as I pointed out elsewhere, there is no more readily available oil. What you could get is going to be expensive and risky. Who pays the price?
