Ryan Galucci, a spokesman for AMVETS, an organization representing more than 180,000 veterans, said his organization supports the decision to send Roos, but he said the visit should not be seen as a conciliatory act.

"Considering how our relationship with Japan has evolved into a peaceful partnership over the years, we support the U.S. decision to send an envoy acknowledging the human toll of WWII," Galucci said in a statement to FoxNews.com. "To AMVETS, the U.S. visit is an appropriate act of reciprocation for Japan's solidarity over the years, such as last summer's visit to the Punch Bowl National Cemetery (the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific) by Emperor Akihito, where he laid a wreath in honor of America's sacrifices in WWII.

"However, in no way should the United States be expected to apologize for its actions, and we hope that this visit will not be misconstrued as an act of contrition."

seems its going both ways (see hirohito above), and its good...there is no argument over who or what was or is right or wrong, only accord that everyone loses in war

its just somantics of the two nations bonding, if a nation is friendly to usa, it has 'fallen in line' (or has puppet installed suckling at the teet) sometime somehow; america likes this and is part of manifest destiny...usa will never rest until all possible overt threats globally are eliminated one way or another (then the assimilation begins; resistance is futile:P)

sheesh, relax

(all your fault for Perry's black ships in the first place, reap what you sow :P)

The Japs should expect no apologies. They started the war. We finished it. If anyone needs to get over it, it's the Japs. In fact, we allowed their Emperor to remain as Emperor after the war.

However, according to the current administration's stance. George Bush is the reason the Japs attacked Pearl Harbor and he dragged us into the war against the poor little Japanese.

It took a strong willed Democrat from Missouri to drop THE BOMB on their asses........... ( that too has since been blamed on George Bush )

My dad was part of the final run and occupation of Tokyo.
The japanese murdered more civilians than the germans, russians and americans combined.
How many were hung for war crimes??
There were two hanged in Manila: Gen. Yamashita, who could count among his achievements as the commander in what was then Malaya when 5,000 Chinese merchants were slaughtered in Singapore, and later in the Philippines when thousands of Batangas villagers were murdered (including women and children). Not to be outdone was Gen. Honma Masaharu who was commander during the Bataan Death March where as many as 3,000 Americans and 8,000 Filipinos died. There were seven who made it to the gallows in Tokyo at the "International Military Tribunal for the Far East": Gen. Matsui Iwane (The Butcher of Nanking), Tojo Hideki (primary architect and advocate of war with the U.S.) Doihara Kenji, Hirota Koki, Itagaki Seishiro, Kimura Heitaro, and Muto Akira. At least two others missed the festivities by poisoning themselves, and a few more died in prison from disease.

wow..bad enough you make a case of, and aver stories assumed by you to be true, despite the lack of facts or evidence, but now it seems your grasp of history regarding us/japan does not extend beyond grossly simplistic and all-encompassingly nationalistic

the japs expect no apology...none is being given; only respect for the dead, any dead, all the dead wtf do you not understand?

you guys fired the first shot at the japanese in 1941..granted, its only technically a factor, as the main attack was on the way anyhow of course.

talk about starting things? japanese maintained isolationist (sound familiar?) policy, they didnt want anyone fussing with them, and didnt want to fuss with anyone else. pretty cool eh?

who rolled on in to one of japans largest port cities and proceeded to shell its buildings, with the first of devastating, revolutionary new state-of-the-art weaponry, as a display of what will continue unless a bullshit treaty all in usa;s favor is signed, violating japans wish for privacy and forcing them to industrialize, modernize, and thus necessarily compete for resources amongst other nations also doing so......not that that led to anything of consequence....
who?

given the situation at the end of the war, and what was foreseen at the time, us had no choice but to allow an emperor, it would have been stupid to do...besides, the emperor was tarred, feathered, (simply by appearing to the public eye and renouncing his divinity) and formally stripped of power, replaced with western (read:US) style goverment, infrastructure, etc

you must be a sandbagger, playing dumb for your own amusement

given the mores of the time and the alternative, it was a no-brainer actually

not many were around to be hanged, largely by suicide in the military, and suicide and murder in the civilian gov.

that the japanese did more civilians (than those 3 combined) is arguable..what sources are you basing this on?

Gee...Dawg, ya seemed to have jerked Daii's panties all in a wad...........

The japs did not get what they deserved...and by that, I don't mean the people, I mean the military.
